More Americans are Heading South and West According to United Van Lines New Data

United Van Lines 42nd annual national movers study, which tracks customers state-to-state migration patterns over the past year, shows more residents moved out of New Jersey than any other state in 2018. The study also shows that Oregon ranked the Second highest percentage nationally for inbound moves with over 3,000 inbound moves total.

As increased migration to Oregon and Washington continues, the demand for buildable land for new housing must keep up. Locally, we have faced housing shortages and affordable housing problems for years, Ettro Capital is working diligently to supply homebuilders with entitled land for new housing developments across the pacific Northwest.

States in the pacific and mountain west regions including Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Washington continue to increase in popularity for inbound moves, Arizona also joined the list of top 10 inbound states for 2018.

Several southern states also experience a high percentage of inbound migration, with North and South Carolina each above 50%.

The migration west is coming mostly from the Northeast where the outbound migration continues to rise. New Jersey, New York and Conneciticut ranked as the highest outbound migration states in 2018.

“As the nation’s largest household goods mover, our study allows us to identify the most and least popular states for residential relocation throughout the country, year after year,” said Eily Cummings, director of corporate communications at United Van Lines. “These findings accurately reflect not only where Americans are moving to and from, but also the reasons why.”

According to the United Van Lines survey, the leading motivation for the migration patterns across all regions is a career change as it showed 1 in 2 people who migrated last year, moved because of a new job or company transfer. Other top listed reasons for migration included retirement, closer proximity to family or lifestyle changes.
